An Employer\u2019s Guide to Workplace Inspections<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n

British Columbia<\/span>\u00a0has a rigorous inspection regimen when it comes to enforcing health and safety in the workplace. The\u00a0<\/span>Ministry of Labour<\/span>\u00a0carries out inspections via\u00a0<\/span>health and safety inspectors<\/span>\u00a0looking to ensure your workplace is compliant with the\u202f<\/span>Occupational Health and Safety<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(OHS)\u00a0<\/span>Regulations<\/span>. Their job is to confirm you\u2019re taking workplace health and safety seriously and following\u00a0<\/span>OHS regulations<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How do inspectors enforce the OHS\u00a0<\/span><\/b>regulations<\/span><\/b>?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Inspections can be conducted proactively without notice or a warrant, or they may happen as a result of a\u00a0<\/span>workplace complaint<\/span>\u00a0or elevation. Depending on the size of the workplace, the employer<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and\/or a health and safety representative<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0or member of the\u00a0<\/span>joint health and safety committee<\/span>\u00a0must be made available to go on the inspection with the inspector.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the event of a serious hazard or violation,\u00a0<\/span>health and safety inspectors<\/span>\u00a0can order an employer to stop work on a certain task, machine, or the operation of the workplace entirely. They can also require employees to leave an area until a hazard has been cleared. These are just some of the many powers given to inspectors.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In severe cases, employers can be charged with failure to comply with the OHS\u00a0<\/span>regulations\u00a0<\/span>and\/or its regulations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
