What is <\/span><\/span>WorkSafe BC<\/span><\/span>?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n

WorkSafe BC<\/span>\u00a0(WSBC)<\/span>\u00a0is a\u00a0<\/span>independent provincial agency<\/span>\u00a0in British Columbia<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that monitors<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>employers\u2019\u00a0<\/span>compliance with\u00a0<\/span>the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation\u202fand the Workers<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0Compensation Act.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span>WSBC\u00a0<\/span>is responsible for<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>prevention of workplace injury and\u00a0<\/span>compensation\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>employees\u00a0<\/span>in the events of work-related injuries or disease.\u00a0<\/span>Furthermore<\/span>, the\u00a0<\/span>WSBC\u00a0<\/span>provides no-fault liability insurance and workers\u2019 compensation to British Columbia\u2019s workplaces.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How does workers\u2019 compensation function for employers?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Most employers in the province must pay a premium<\/span>\u00a0that<\/span> funds <\/span>WorkSafe BC<\/span>. In return,\u00a0<\/span>the W<\/span>S<\/span>B<\/span>C<\/span>\u00a0compensates your employees for work-related injuries no matter the cause of injury. Additionally, employers are protected from lawsuits taken by employees for work-related injuries<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>when they receive\u00a0<\/span>W<\/span>S<\/span>B<\/span>C<\/span>\u00a0compensation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Note that<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the amount of compensation is determined by the seriousness of the injury<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and possible time off from work. Not all injuries are covered by\u00a0<\/span>W<\/span>S<\/span>B<\/span>C<\/span>, such as unrelated health problems that occur outside of work.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Employer Responsibilities\u00a0<\/span><\/b>With<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>WorkSafe BC<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

You are required to register for\u00a0<\/span>WorkSafeBC<\/span>\u00a0insurance coverage if you own a business that hires one or more\u00a0<\/span>employees<\/span>\u00a0on a full-time, part-time, casual, or contract basis.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Specifically<\/span>, employers<\/span>\u00a0have the responsibility to:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Work with employees to prevent on-the-job injuries and accidents<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Report any injury to\u00a0<\/span>WorkSafe BC<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Provide treatment and medical attention for any injury that occurs at work<\/span>; and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Maintain a\u00a0<\/span>W<\/span>S<\/span>B<\/span>C<\/span>\u00a0account and pay premiums<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
