{"id":3681,"date":"2019-10-11T20:00:01","date_gmt":"2019-10-11T20:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.healthandsafetyhelp.ca\/?page_id=3681"},"modified":"2025-01-09T14:36:33","modified_gmt":"2025-01-09T14:36:33","slug":"occupational-health-and-safety-act","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/healthandsafetyhelp.ca\/ab\/employer-advice\/occupational-health-and-safety-act\/","title":{"rendered":"Occupational Health and Safety Act"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>What is the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In Alberta, the <em><u><a href=\"https:\/\/search-ohs-laws.alberta.ca\/legislation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)<\/a><\/u><\/em><em>, <\/em>Regulation and Code set the health and safety requirements for provincially regulated businesses. The OHSA is enforced by Alberta Occupational Health and Safety, through inspections, investigation and prosecutions.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Employer Responsibilities Under the OHSA<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Alberta employers must protect the health and safety of their workers by preventing injury, illnesses and death in the workplace. To ensure that employers fulfill this duty, the <em>Occupational Health and Safety Act<\/em> requires employers to do the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep the workplace safe by protecting, training and supervising employees<\/li>\n<li>Educate employees on their rights under OHSA<\/li>\n<li>Consult the health and safety representative or joint health and safety committee when resolving workplace health and safety concerns<\/li>\n<li>Cooperate with employees complying with OHSA<\/li>\n<li>Provide employees with information on hazards and health and safety in the workplace, including a copy of the OHSA<\/li>\n<li>Develop a health and safety policy and program<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Check to make sure you are fulfilling these criteria in your workplace. Is your business compliant with the OHSA?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Establishing a Health and Safety Representative or Joint Health and Safety Committee\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The OHSA requires employers to have a health and safety representative or joint health and safety committee to help assess and protect the workplace.
